SproSS - Indicators review and update
The Provincial Strategy for Sustainable Development (SproSS), approved in Trentino in 2021, requires a monitoring system capable of assessing the consistency among objectives, indicators, and expected outcomes. The revision of provincial indicators responds to the need to move beyond a purely local perspective and connect Trentino’s monitoring system with the National Strategy for Sustainable Development. This makes it possible to assess the extent to which Trentino contributes to the strategic choices defined at the national level, while also taking into account European, OECD, and United Nations work.
The project
The project aims to improve the monitoring system of the Provincial Strategy for Sustainable Development by revising and expanding the corresponding set of provincial indicators. FBK-IRVAPP works with the Provincial Agency for Environmental Protection and the Statistical Institute of the Autonomous Province of Trento, which planned the revision of the existing indicator system.
Activities will take place in two phases throughout 2026. During the first six months, the project will analyse the SproSS indicators currently in use, assessing their consistency and adequacy in relation to the objectives of the provincial strategy, the national strategy and international work. In the second half of the year, new indicators will be defined, including policy indicators, following examples from some European areas. The indicators will be classified according to the 5 strategic areas and 20 sustainability objectives of the SproSS, while also highlighting interconnections between objectives and strategic areas.
Expected results
The project is expected to produce a revised system of provincial indicators for monitoring the SproSS and to define new indicators, including policy indicators. The updated system will support the monitoring not only of sustainability performance and objectives, but also of the policy measures adopted in this field. The classification of indicators according to the 5 strategic areas and 20 sustainability objectives of the SproSS will also make the interconnections between areas and objectives more explicit, strengthening the link between provincial monitoring and the National Strategy for Sustainable Development.
