Abstract
This paper studies the effects of a massive medical fraud in hospitals wards. Using public procurement data, we are able to extract the exact date when hospitals started purchasing allegedly diluted antiseptics and disinfectants sold by a large pharmaceutical company in Romania. We use the variation generated by the time each hospital started using fake biocides and show that fraud can have extreme effects on neonatal health outcomes. We find significant negative impacts on (early) neonatal death. The main mechanism in place is related to hospital-acquired infections.

Andreea Mitrut is a Professor at the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg. Her expertise and current interests are at the intersection of labor economics, public economics, and political economy. She has contributed to different streams of literature, including on Education, Early Child Development, Fertility and Family Planning, Corruption, and Social Exclusion. She has published in journals such as AEJ: Economic Policy, the Economic Journal, Journal of Human Resources or Journal of Public Economics.
