Exposure to ethnic minorities and attitudes towards them

10 Settembre 2020 | 15:00 — 16:00

FBK-IRVAPP is pleased to invite you to the following seminar: “Acquisition of Citizenship Increases theLong-Term Earnings of Marginalized Immigrants”
With the partecipation of: Riccardo Ghidoni.
Language The seminar is held in english.
Abstract We study whether exposure to ethnic minorities changes attitudes to ethnic diversity. We use individual fixed-effects regressions that build upon data on the location of refugee centers in the Netherlands. We find that people living in the neighborhood of refugee centers tend to acquire a more positive attitude to ethnic diversity, provided that exposure to refugees lasts at least six months. Positive changes in attitudes are particularly strong for younger people, women and households with children, that is for those social groups that are likely to have personal contacts with refugees through, for example, the schooling system. On the other hand, people who live in a municipality with a center but not in the same neighborhood of the center, tend to adopt more negative attitudes. Taken together, our findings show that being closely exposed to ethnic minorities for a sufficiently long time can effectively erode prejudices.
