Abstract We study whether exposure to ethnic minorities changes attitudes to ethnic diversity. We use individual fixed-effects regressions that build upon data on the location of refugee centers in the Netherlands. We find that people living in the neighborhood of refugee centers tend to acquire a more positive attitude to ethnic diversity, provided that exposure to refugees lasts at least six months. Positive changes in attitudes are particularly strong for younger people, women and households with children, that is for those social groups that are likely to have personal contacts with refugees through, for example, the schooling system. On the other hand, people who live in a municipality with a center but not in the same neighborhood of the center, tend to adopt more negative attitudes. Taken together, our findings show that being closely exposed to ethnic minorities for a sufficiently long time can effectively erode prejudices.

University of Milan-BicoccaRiccardo Ghidoni is Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, Management, and Statistics at the University of Milan-Bicocca and an Extramural Fellow in the Economics department at Tilburg University. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Bologna. Riccardo is primarily interested in pro-sociality and cooperation. Most of his research aims at identifying conditions and motivations under which individuals resist opportunistic temptations to reach socially desirable outcomes. His research has appeared in international journals like Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, European Economic Review, the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management and Energy Economics.
