IRVAPP ADVANCED SCHOOL 2022 - Advanced Methods for Impact Evaluation (Online)

The school is designed to be particularly beneficial to graduate students and researchers with intermediate proficiency in applied policy evaluation and quantitative micro-econometrics. It will run over six consecutive days, from January 31 to February 5, 2022, from 2.00 pm (CET) to 5.30 pm (CET) (30mins break at 3.30 pm). It will focus on the estimation of policy effects with endogenous participation. Different solutions to the identification problem will be discussed, resulting in three thematic sessions.

The school consists of 12 slots (9 theoretical sessions and 3 basic training sessions); each slot lasts 90 minutes. The training sessions will be in Stata: a temporary Stata license will be released on demand.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the school will be held online.

Targeted audience
This is an intermediate/advanced course on quantitative empirical methods for policy evaluation. Knowledge of methods for treatment effects and quantitative micro-econometrics equivalent to Ph.D. or Doctorate level coursework is required. Although the exercises will be guided, basic familiarity with Stata is strongly recommended.

Programme:

Discontinuities

This part will address identification of policy effects when the probability of participation changes discontinuously or has kinks along observable dimensions. Starting with the basic methodology and implementation, the module will discuss extensions ranging from multiple cut-offs, to extrapolation and external validity, and randomization-inference methods.

Difference-in-Differences

This part will discuss several empirical strategies at the research frontier of modern difference-in-differences research designs. Our agenda includes discussions on the role of covariates, research designs with variation in the timing of treatment, and treatment effect dynamics and heterogeneity through the lens of event studies.

Synthetic Control

This part will present the advantages of the synthetic control method as a research design: starting with the description of the relevant setting and estimation, it will discuss contextual requirements in which the synthetic control method can provide reliable estimates and those where it may fail, covering recent extensions on the topic and illustrating examples from the literature.

The course will be taught in English.

Office hours:

The instructors will be available for individual meetings with participants willing to discuss their research project. Given the limited amount of time available, requests will be dealt with on a first-in first-served basis.

Materials:

All the slides used by instructors will be sent to participants prior to the beginning of the school.

All lectures link will be sent some days before the lecture.
